Mission Systems to present its innovative Single-Sortie Detect to Engage (SSDTE) solution at the National Defense Industry Association conference
Mission Systems Pty Ltd is honoured to announce its participation in the NDIA 2025 Undersea Warfare Fall Conference, taking place 15–17 September at the U.S. Navy submarine base in Groton, Connecticut. The event is globally recognised as an important gathering of undersea warfare experts, defence agencies, and military technology innovators.
This invitation, traditionally extended only to a select few U.S. and allied stakeholders, reflects Australia’s deepening strategic ties with the U.S. under the AUKUS alliance, and highlights the growing contribution of Australian-led innovation to allied defence capability.
David Battle to Present on Autonomous Mine Countermeasures
Representing Mission Systems at the conference is Director and Maritime Robotics specialist, Dr David Battle, who will deliver a presentation titled:
“Developments in Single-Sortie Detect to Engage for Non-Permissive Environments.”
His session will explore the deployment of Mission Systems’ Nautilus technology; a cutting-edge solution developed in Australia to enable autonomous mine countermeasures (MCM) in highly contested environments.
Nautilus: Autonomous and Covert
Dr Battle’s presentation focuses on how Nautilus supports single-sortie detect-to-engage operations — a technical advancement that allows unmanned systems to detect, classify, and neutralise underwater mines autonomously, without the need for return trips or human intervention.
This innovation is significant on multiple fronts:
🛡️ Safety: Reduces risk to human personnel in hostile waters
⚙️ Efficiency: Speeds up response times by condensing multi-stage missions into a single sortie
🌊 Scalability: Offers the potential for neutralising entire minefields in a single mission
“It’s a significant moment,” says Dr Battle. “Not only is Australia being welcomed into one of the
most strategic conversations in undersea warfare, but Mission Systems has the opportunity to showcase Nautilus, our advanced autonomous MCM solution, on an international stage.”
What This Means for Australia and Allied Defence
Mission Systems’ presentation at the NDIA conference underscores the evolving role of Australia within the global defence innovation landscape. The company’s participation is not only a national milestone — it also highlights the importance of modular, interoperable, and expeditionary undersea systems in the future of allied naval operations.
From the Indian Ocean to the North Atlantic, autonomous capabilities like Nautilus are redefining what’s possible below the surface.
About the Conference
Hosted by the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA), the Undersea Warfare Fall Conference brings together military leaders, scientists, and defence industry partners to exchange insights on some of the most advanced and sensitive technologies in mine warfare, submarines, undersea vehicles, surveillance systems, and AI-enabled platforms.
The 2025 conference agenda reflects increasing urgency around multi-domain integration, unmanned operations, and allied interoperability — with sessions dedicated to next-gen sonar, persistent undersea surveillance, and AUKUS collaboration.
Mission Systems is proud to contribute to this evolving conversation.
Looking Ahead
As Australia steps into a new era of global defence cooperation, Mission Systems will continue to invest in sovereign technologies that enable safer, faster, and more capable operations beneath the waves.
